Swettenham Stud to stand SIOUX NATION, Group 1 winning 2yo speed son of Scat Daddy

Swettenham Stud are excited to announce that Scat Daddy’s Group 1 winning 2yo sprinting son, SIOUX NATION, is heading to their prestigious Victorian nursery for the 2019 breeding season.

SIOUX NATION will be the first son of the ill-fated speed sire Scat Daddy to stand in Victoria and will cater to the local market looking for precocious 2yo speed. Other sons of Scat Daddy include his magnificent 2018 American Triple Crown winner Justify, unbeaten two-year-old Caravaggio and the record-breaking No Nay Never.

Swettenham’s Adam Sangster is thrilled about bringing this proven global bloodline to Australia and making it accessible to the Victorian breeders while keeping the family ties between the Magnier and Sangster family as strong as ever.

 “Securing SIOUX NATION is an incredible coup for the Victorian breeding industry. Tom Magnier and his father John Magnier recognise that breeders here have heavily supported Highland Reel and although they had planned to stand Sioux Nation in the Hunter, the Magnier family have graciously allowed the stallion to stand with us at Swettenham Stud knowing he will be very popular with Victorian breeders.”

“He’s a Group 1 winning two-year-old by a world-class sire. I saw him in Ireland and he is a magnificent, strong and masculine individual that stands over 16.1 hands. Raw power, he’s built like a true Australian speed horse” Sangster said. “He matured early and won at Royal Ascot at two. We can’t wait for SIOUX NATION to arrive at Swettenham and parade him to our loyal breeders.”

Australia’s commercial market loves a quick-maturing two-year-old, and they don’t mature much more quickly than SIOUX NATION. Retained to race by Coolmore, Sioux Nation won his maiden decisively by nearly four lengths and when winning the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes over 1000 metres at Royal Ascot he was following in the footsteps of Scat Daddy’s leading sire son No Nay Never.

In winning the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, Sioux Nation defeated a crack field which included US Navy Flag and Romanised, proving himself as one of the best sprinters of his generation.

“There is no doubt he will suit the Australian conditions, as all his wins were on turf and he loves fast ground,” Sangster said. “Importantly though, Sioux Nation was able to train on, and perform at the top level at three, winning the Group 3 Lacken Stakes over 1200 metres and was gallantly placed in the Group 1 Flying Five Stakes over 1000 metres”.

Aside from his sire, SIOUX NATION gets his pace from his broodmare sire, the champion sprinter and leading sire, Oasis Dream, and his second dam Catch The Blues (Bluebird), who won the 1000 metres Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes and was Group 1 placed in the 1200 metres Haydock Sprint Cup.

“He comes from a European speed-focused pedigree. He is free of Danehill and Galileo blood and will be a brilliant breeding outcross for the Australian mare population,” Sangster said.

Trained by Ballydoyle’s Aidan O’Brien, he was genuinely impressed with how the colt won at Royal Ascot stating “His turn of foot won it. He travelled very well and quickened easily being a big, powerful horse with a lot of pace, and a great mind. He is pure Scat Daddy raw speed.”

Champion jockey Ryan Moore was equally impressed “I couldn’t have been more impressed when he won the Phoenix Stakes and I loved him at Ascot. He gave me a beautiful feel when he got fast ground. He’s a beautiful horse and I think he’s got a big future at stud.”

Sioux Nation will stand at Swettenham Stud in 2019 for $16,000 plus GST and will arrive at Swettenham Stud in August 2019.
