Americain flies the flag at Swettenham Stud
June 22, 2015
Swettenham Stud mare Northeast Note was in the spotlight at Cranbourne and Oaklands Junction on Sunday.
Her Kaphero filly Northkape won the $130,000 Inglis VOBIS Gold Plate (1000m) first-up for a large syndicate put together by trainer Robbie Griffiths.
The speedy filly crossed the line two lengths clear at exactly the same time that an Americain - Northeast Note foal sold at the Inglis Great Southern Sale. Swettenham owner Adam Sangster and Americain’s part-owner Gerry Ryan received $85,000 for the colt at Oaklands Junction.
Griffiths targeted the lucrative VOBIS Gold Plate feature with Northkape and she played her part to perfection. The debutante went straight to the front and kicked clear in the straight to score comfortably.
“There’s a big team here and they’re very excited,” stable representative Jade Matthews said. “Most of these guys are in it just for fun, not the money, but these VOBIS incentives are fantastic.
“She’s done the job in her trials at home,” Matthews revealed. “We didn’t quite expect her to be that strong on raceday but she’s always been very professional.”
The Americain - Northeast Note youngster made the Top 5 colts’ leader-board on Day 1 of the Great Southern Sale. He was purchased by successful pin-hooker Steve Jostlear who operates Ampulla Lodge in West Gippsland.
Northeast Note (Stravinsky) is an unraced half-sister to LR Victorian St Leger winner Berlioz and hails from the famed Eight Carat family. She is due to deliver another Americain foal in October.
Americain (USA) has covered 288 mares in his first two books at Swettenham Stud. He will be back at the Nagambie nursery in August after serving his first European mares at the Irish National Stud.
Swettenham will stand him for an unchanged service fee of $13,750 (inc gst) this year.
Hoofnote: Americain’s colt out of Apologies (Giant’s Causeway) sold for $60,000 when offered by Burnewang North Pastoral at the Great Southern Foal Sale on Monday morning.
