Equiano colt set for Royal Ascot
April 4, 2015
Tribesman launched Equiano’s second northern crop with a blistering victory in the Scottish Brocklesby Stakes (1000m) on Good Friday.
Trainer David Brown declared his colt will head to G2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot after an eye-catching display on debut at Musselburgh. “I felt sure Tribesman would win before the race – he´s got some class. He’s won even though he’s green and would be better suited to much faster ground.”
Tribesman was described by Sporting Life as an “exciting prospect” after he tracked even-money favourite First Bombardment and then quickened on soft ground to score by more than two lengths. “He’s the first of my 32 two year-olds to run and will have another start before Royal Ascot,” Brown added. “Something like the (LR) National Stakes at Sandown in May.”
Equiano (Fr) sired three stakes performers and 16 individual winners among his first English-bred two year-olds in 2014. The Swettenham Stud shuttler is already off the mark in Australia and there are more winners in the wings with trainers like Chris Waller and Peter Moody.
Tribesman (2c Equiano – Millsini by Rossini) is owned by John Fretwell and cost 35,000 pounds (AUD 63,325) at last year’s Doncaster August yearling sale. He’s from a half-sister to Mirza (Oasis Dream), a stakes winning sprinter in Ireland and France.
Equiano’s next Victorian bred yearlings will go under the hammer at the Inglis VOBIS Gold Sale. Swettenham has catalogued two colts and a filly for Oaklands Junction on April 19 & 20.
