Equiano colt in control at Glorious Goodwood
August 2, 2014
Equiano colt Son Of Africa graduated from a Windsor maiden to win again at the Glorious Goodwood meeting on Friday.
The Henry Candy trained youngster shadowed the leader Dominic Cork for the first 400m and then took control of the Jack Berry House Nursery (1200m). He won by a half-length from the favourite Markaz (Dark Angel).
“The plan was to drop in and get some cover but he shot from the stalls like a bullet and rather than disappoint him, I let him stride on,” jockey James Doyle said. “Goodwood is a hard place for a two-year-old to make all the running and he got a bit lonely in front.”
Son Of Africa (2c Equiano – Generously Gifted by Sakhee) had won on debut at Windsor on June 9 and he stuck on gamely under 58kg at Goodwood after being tackled by a couple of quick closers in the final furlong.
He topped the Ascot 2YO Sale in April at 52,000 pounds (AUD 93,505) after an eye-catching breeze-up. The Equiano factor was also a positive and he has upgraded the bottom of the colt’s pedigree. His dam is an unraced half-sister to hurdle winners in England & Italy and flat winners in Germany, Belgium and Greece.
Equiano (Fr) will return to Swettenham Stud for his third southern book this year at a $16,500 (inc gst) service fee.
