2015 Melbourne Premier Yearlings
The objective of yearling preparation is to be able to present each yearling in its best light, which means that it appears athletic and well-conditioned, with a good basic education that will make it easy to train, a calm and willing disposition that will allow it to make the most of its natural ability, and with any conformational faults minimised so that it can reach its maximum price in the appropriate sale.
The process starts when the yearlings arrive and are brought into the yearling barn. Colts and fillies are segregated as they begin their basic education. They are taught to stand quietly while they are groomed, have their manes pulled and tails neatened, to stand for the farrier, dentist and vet, and to parade for potential buyers. Their diet is carefully monitored to build muscle, while their exercise regime is designed to optimise their physical appearance. Grooming is carried out every day to bring a healthy gloss to the coat and lead to a relaxed attitude while being washed and prepared for presentation. The farrier works to keep their feet level, helping with any conformational problems, while the vet will provide the necessary scans to ensure that the horse is suitable to be presented at a sale, which may include an endoscopic exam of its throat and x-rays of its joints, depending on the sale. The stud manager will work with the auction houses to ensure that the horse is placed in the right sale, and will also ensure that good photos and/or video footage is taken of the yearling via Sirecam.
Once the sale begins, Swettenham pays particular attention to ensure that each potential buyer gets to see the yearlings at their best. This includes having experienced and professional staff who can present the yearlings well, a neat and tidy area to walk the yearlings, and a customer hosting area that encouraged potential buyers to stay in the Swettenham camp for longer – giving Adam and the team a chance to discuss the draft with them and hopefully encourage a purchase.
