FINALLY some one rides a Hold That Tiger in the manner they DESERVE
Thursday, 11 March 2010

Bunbury Cup Winner Whipsaw
Hold That Tiger produced a great winner in Thursday’s WA feature event the Bunbury Cup. The gelding at only his sixth start stormed away with the LISTED Bunbury Cup worth over $132,000.

Daniel Staeck rode a heady, patient ride on the big free striding gelding. The ride was reminiscent of Keiren Fallon on Hold That Tiger when he came from absolute last at the 300m mark in a field of 16 in a Group 1 2YO race over 1400m. Once young Daniel got Whipsaw off the heels of the tailenders and out in the open spaces turning he really stretched out in fine fashion. His final burst had all the makings of a top horse.

For trainer Mark Reed he really showed a deep appreciation of his future star by heading to such a prestigious race at only his sixth start and third run this time up. Whipsaw kicked off this campaign with a 1000m trial on Feb 8th before a 1200m race fresh over 1200m at Ascot on Feb 17th for a solid 5th placing. Mark then headed to Pinjarra to break the horses Maiden over 1600m in comfortable fashion by over 3 lengths on Feb 28th before tackling the Cup over 2200m on the 11th of March. From 1000m to 2200m in 31 days now that is an effort.

With a rating of 59 heading into the Cup Whipsaw was entitled to be in receipt of another 16.5kgs from Group 1 winner Guyno (Rating 102 and weighted 58kgs). However with the minimum Cup weight of 53kgs he was forced to give his older, more experienced rivals this huge weight advantage.

Whipsaw’s dam Supalan by Haulpak was unplaced in three starts, but is a half-sister to good WA galloper and stakeswinner VALPARAISO (a filly by Bianconi another Swettenham based stallion). Supalan’s dam was the stakesplaced Luluwa a half-sister to Twigalae the dam of GATANA (the grandam of FASTNET ROCK).

For those that follow the winning horses on our website they may have followed the editor and had a good win at the $22 when the Pinjarra comment read: “5th at Ascot first up over 1200m then 11 day back up to 1600m was a task and he handled it with aplomb. Cruised home by over 3L. Next start from here will be interesting.

Tumbulgum Makes It Three From Four In Singapore
Sunday, 21 February 2010

Trainer Michael Freedman and jockey Danny Beasley combined for a race-to-race double with a couple of smart performers in Singapore.

Freedman in fact had the perfect day, saddling two runners for two winners.

Zac Beat It got the ball rolling by taking the $75,000 Progress Stakes over 1600m while Bianconi gelding Tumbulgum made it three wins from four starts in Singapore with victory in the $95,000 Class 2 Stakes over 1200m.

Freedman described Tumbulgum as “very brilliant” and right up there as one of the best gallopers he has prepared in his short stint in Singapore.

Working his way to an early lead, Tumbulgum held on to score by a length over the gallant Smart Excel (Mark Gallagher) with Pacino (Barend Vorster) a nose away third.

To add merit to the victory the gelding lost a shoe from one of his front feet.

“I don’t think he was as brilliant today as what he was when successful at his second start here,” said Freedman.

“But he has had a bit of racing and he did have to do a bit of work early.”

Tumbulgum suffered his only Singapore defeat at the hands of Better Than Ever in the Group 3 Three Rings Trophy over 1400m and Freedman felt the gelding was a little to brilliant at this stage for that trip.

He said he will now give serious consideration to taking on the likes of Rocket Man, Tuxedo Moon and Mexican Rose in the Group 3 Merlion Trophy over 1200m on the Polytrack on March 12.

“He’s proven himself on the Polytrack and I think he deserves a shot at that race,” said Freedman.

“I’ll monitor how he pulls up from this race and if I think everything is OK with him then he can go on to that race.

“If I think he’s a little jaded, then he can have a freshen up and we’ll look at something a little easier.

“Maybe the Kranji Sprint which is run under handicap conditions could be a good option.”

The Group 3 $200,000 Kranji Sprint over 1200m is the second leg of the Singapore Sprint Series and will be run on April 2.

Tumbulgum, a four-year-old by Bianconi from the Alquoz mare Herries has now won around $140,000 in prizemoney for owner John McPhee.
