Louisiana Downs US$50k 2YO Stks (LISTED) 1600m Turf

You Can’t Pull Your Socks Up If You Don’t Have Any On ….
Wednesday, 12 May 2010

Well that is not the case with owners Charles and Wendy Langmaid who race the very promising son of Keep The Faith in Socks. Trained by George Blacker at Longford in Tasmania the 2YO has been to the trials and the races on 6 occasions and is yet to taste defeat, earning $75,600 to-date.

In fact his last start win was his most impressive in the 1200m $40,000 Betfair.com.au Plate in Hobart at Tattersall’s Park. Socks rounded the field up on the corner and never looked like being troubled in what could only be described as a soft win albeit by half a length. It was jockey Kelvin Sanderson (nicknamed “The Iceman” by Tony Vasil) at his very best.

The plan is for one more race next Thursday week 20th May at the Launceston night meeting in the1400m  $50,000 Tasmanian Sires’ Produce Stakes before Socks heads to the spelling paddock. He does seriously look like a horse who will take a lot of benefit from a spell and the opportunity to fill out into his very striking frame.

George Blacker was enthusiastic about Socks when asked “He is a very nice horse and one of the best young horse's I've trained. Today's win was excellent because he's come from well back and held them out when it counted.”

The win confirmed the high regard Swettenham Stud has for the horse’s breeder Robyn Whishaw and her Armidale Stud who are constant supporters of our stallions. Socks is a graduate of the 2009 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale. This was a particularly disappointing sale for all concerned, but Robyn is a steadfast supporter of her local industry.

Socks was the last lot on the first day. He was passed in and later sold to the Langmaids for $15,000. He was certainly at least the equal of the average Keep The Faith colt offered in their first sales season in 2009 where the Keep The Faith progeny averaged above $28,000 across all sales and sexes.

The last word goes to Charles who explained that he was drawn to the sire of Socks after watching Keep The Faith race and as the mother of Socks - Count The Kisses was well bred, he believed she was entitled to throw a good galloper. (IR)

Court Of Jewels - Mr Consistent
Monday, 19 April 2010

The first 18 days in the month of April really sums up the career of Court of Jewels. Seven starters for the month (8 starts) for – 3 winners, 1 second, 1 third, 1 fourth, 1 fifth and 1 sixth.

Court Of Jewels the ¾ brother to Commands and Danewin has inherited their family characteristics, as all three stallions could be deemed Mr Consistent when it comes to their competitors on the stallion ranks.

The latest runner for Court Of Jewels this month was Bryson’s Height who backed up a 4th at Cranbourne over a 1000m a week earlier, with a solid win over 1300m in the $15,000 Cranbourne Maiden yesterday (18th April) for trainer Jason Williams with brother Craig in the saddle at only his third career start.

Earlier on the 15th of April at Mt. Gambier Ace or Joka won for part owner/trainer Ian Walker from Millicent. This was one day after Clay Paver had saluted first up from a spell at Strathalbyn for trainer Lisa Ryan who trains the gelding for her father Dr T. Ryan.

When you throw in a very good run (slow away) from Alezzie at Moonee Valley when 3rd on April 5th it is easy to see why the stallion Court of Jewels has such a solid owner/breeder/trainer support base.

A Lot To Like About Host
Saturday, 17 April 2010

Host, who can lay claim to being among the best performed racehorses to come out of South America, is now on the threshold of a new career.

Host Yearlings
He was secured in the early part of 2008 by Adam Sangster, to stand as a sire at his Swettenham Stud, near Nagambie.

Host has a lot of appeal, he was proven in both South and North America with the majority of his wins at Group level.

If his first crop of foals, delivered last Spring, are any indication he is in for another good season come September.

Host is now facing up to his third season which can be a critical stage for a sire, with some breeders preferring to sit back and wait to see how the progeny perform.

He covered 119 mares in his first season with a fertility of 91.2 per cent, even with natural attrition he should be well represented with runners in the 2011-2012 racing season.

His sire line suggests speed which is the prime ingredient of our racing and there is little chance of that changing.

Host is leaving good types of young horses illustrated by two excellent weanlings at Neil Ham’s Anvil Park property, at Bamawm.

Our Friends Enjoy Great Success
Wednesday, 14 April 2010
Many breeders can only dream of a big weekend when their mares progeny make their mark in big races. When the dream becomes reality with a Group 1 victory at Randwick and a Sha Tin victory that catapults both horses towards the top echelon then that could be considered a weekend to remember.
Pip Cooper has enjoyed just that weekend. Her benevolence extended to a friend John Pittard resulted in her mare Fuji Fairy producing the Group 1 AJC Sires’ Produce winner Yosei. To assist John take up a free return to the stallion Invincible Spirit when his mare had died Pip lent him Fuji Fairy. Her assistance even extended to her naming the Group 1 winner for John.
Pip sent Fuji Fairy to Bianconi the year  that Yosei was born and the mare produced a stunning filly in 2008 and she is presently in foal to Bianconi from her 2009 service.
John Pittard in the meantime has secured a mare for his own breeding enterprises and she is presently in foal to Host. John is the farrier at Swettenham Stud and his care and attention to the foals over the last two years is first class. In fact the trainer of Yosei, Stuart Webb often attends with John to assist with the farrier duties at Swettenham so the Group 1 win certainly involved a large number of close friends and clients.
Pip’s weekend did not end there as she produced You Gotta Pay the very exciting son of Bianconi from Pip’s Lunchtime mare Food of Love to win his fourth race in Hong Kong. After one run and win at the end of last season in Hong Kong the horse has really come back this season stronger, more mature and typical of the Bianconi stock ready to tough it out in his races. He should arguably be undefeated in Hong Kong with his two placings caused when he got held up in traffic.
It is extremely gratifying to see committed breeders and genuine thoroughbred enthusiasts taste success and we hope there is much more to come for all our loyal clients.
