Phelan Ready Dam In Foal To Soldier's Tale
Friday, 23 January 2009

Swettenham Stud's exciting young Stravinsky sire Soldier's Tale received a boost when exciting youngster Phelan Ready scored a brilliant win in the $2 million Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast.

Phelan Ready is the first runner and second foal for the Group winning Blevic mare Nancy Eleanor - a mare served last October by Soldier's Tale.

The mare, who is back in the hands of her original owners and managed by Terry Broad, was a top racemare in her own right, headlined by her victory in the Group 3 Adelaide Guineas with Phillip Stokes.

Nancy Eleanor was one of 95 quality mares covered by Soldier's Tale in his initial season at stud.

Others in his outstanding first book included the likes of:

  • Arabian Lass - Group One winning mare by Al Mufti
  • Bracken Bank - Group Two winner by Sir Tristram and dam of triple stakes winner Niagara Falls
  • Camargue - Group winning sister to Bomber Bill
  • In the Mist - Five time stakes winner. Dam of Group Two winner De Lago Mist
  • Kensington Gardens - Stakes placed. Dam of Group One winners Blackfriars and Larrocha and SWs Waterford Road and Manton
  • Leica Smile - Group One winner by At Talaq
  • Leica Vista - Stakes placed. Dam of Group Two winner Moon Dragon
  • Les Lilas - Dam of Group Two winner Requiem and stakes winner Laurel Grove
  • Livelihood - Stakes winning juvenile. Dam of stakes winners Living Spirit and Only She Can
  • Musical Note - Dam of Hong Kong Group One winner Packing Winner
  • Our Game Plan - Triple stakes placegetter in America
  • Sorority - Dam of Group winning sire Happy Giggle and stakes placed Happy Spring
  • Torrential Storm - Dam of Group Two winner Stormhill and stakes placed trio Hurricane Storm, Sovereign Squall and Danish Storm
  • Vainremer - dam of stakes winner Cation

Soldier's Tale, by Serenade Rose's sire Stravinsky, raced on just eight occasions for four wins and three minor placings. On the other occasion he was fourth in the July Cup.

Among Soldier's Tale's four wins was a thrilling victory over Australian champion Takeover Target in the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes and victory in the Group Three Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle.

Interestingly Soldier's Tale's sire Stravinsky was the champion first season sire in the United States as well as being the Champion Sire of 2YOs in New Zealand in 2005-06.

Hold That Tiger Notches a 100 and a 50
Thursday, 15 January 2009

Hold That Tiger cracks the century with 100 individual winners courtesy of his son Zooger winning at his second start in a US $44,000 3YO Maiden over 1700m on dirt at Philadelphia Park on the 5/1/09. Zooger continued the incredible run of the sire's stock once they mature just a touch. He raced on the speed and out toughed his main opponent in a drive to the wire.

Hold That Tiger

Two days later Hold That Tiger started the push to a double century with another 3YO winner at his second career start. This time it was Son of Tiger in a Tampa Bay Maiden over 1200m on dirt. He raced more like the sire's stock by settling fifth and coming with a late charge.

On the same day Hold That Tiger produced his 50th multiple winner when Hold That Broad won the Hawthorne US$30,000 Allowance race for 3YO's over 1200m on dirt.

Hold That Tiger ran two very courageous races on dirt both over 9 furlongs (1800m) including a very competitive second to the champion US Horse of the Year Mineshaft in the Group 1 Woodward Stakes and a third in the Group 1 Breeder's Cup Juvenile 2YO after being stuck out on a limb the whole trip.

However, Hold That Tiger went even better on the turf winning his first two starts at 6 furlongs (1200m) in Ireland before heading to France for an absolutely spectacular win in the Group 1 2YO Grand Criterium at Longchamp, over 7 Furlongs (1400m); which he won in a scintillating 1.20.4 after being held up inside runners and still in last place in the 16 strong field with 250m to go.

Only 49 named foals from his first Australian crop has meant that Swettenham Stud have waited patiently for most to mature a touch more. All reports suggest loads of ability and that is backed up in the statistics that have over 14% already stakes horses or metro winners.

Most trainers report that the stock show very good ability in track gallops at 2 years of age. However, the more astute trainers have always felt they were going to be 3YO's and been appropriately patient.

That point is well proved in the US, where Hold That Tiger produced the most individual winners by any second season sire in the season just completed (2008).

Hold That Tiger's foals are generally very well bodied individuals and often the best type of foal bred by their breeders, so we find very few getting to yearling sales.

Hence as good, strong, well muscled horses they have all benefited with time; essentially allowing the required maturity in joints to cope with their trademark strong muscular bodies.

Hold That Tiger is one of 12 only recognized champions by Storm Cat and one of only 8 ever Group 1 winning 2YO's by Storm Cat. He stands at Swettenham Stud, Nagambie at a fee of $13,200 including GST with a live foal guarantee.

New Web Video Loaded For Kaphero
Monday, 22 December 2008

The video on the new stallion at Swettenham Stud in 2009 has just been added to the web site. The video gives potential breeders a great insight into the power and speed of this new and exciting stallion prospect.

This is real 2YO speed; through a real 2YO family; with a real 2YO pedigree. Kaphero - 3 wins as a 2YO; Danzero - 3 wins as a 2YO; Kapchat - 2 wins as a 2YO; Hunza - 5 wins as a 2YO, Courtza - 3 wins as a 2YO.

Kaphero a three times 2YO winner; a Blue Diamond Preview winner; a Magic Millions winner; the long time leader in a fast run Golden Slipper. Then the winner of another seven metropolitan races and Moonee Valley Horse of the Year with his last Group 1 race resulting in a half-length 3rd in the Manikato Stakes 1200m.

Watch the video as he is a stallion that deserves your utmost attention.

Bianconi Broodmare Gives Debut City Winner
Thursday, 18 December 2008

An unusual feature of the dashing win of the Peter Moody trained colt Carlton Forward in the juvenile event which opened the program at Flemington on Saturday was that it resulted in the first winner for the Arrowfield Stud based Red Ransom sire Charge Forward and also the first for a product of a mare by Bianconi, the Danzig Ireland champion 3-year-old sprinter in the powerful line up of sires at Adam Sangster’s Swettenham Stud at Nagambie in Victoria.

Carlton Forward is the first winner from the first crop of AJC Galaxy and San Domenico winner and short neck Golden Slipper second Charge Forward.

Carlton Forward, a winner and second in Melbourne at his only outings, is the first runner in Australia from a mare by Bianconi, a sire from his Australian use of 138 winners, including 18 who have won or stakes placed.

In addition North American bred daughters of Bianconi so far have had four runners for two winners and two other money earners.

He offers much as a broodmare sire, not only being by one of the most powerful enforcers in modern world breeding, Danzig, but being from Fall Aspen, a Group1 winner and producer of nine stakes winners.

Bred by the Mitchells at their Yarraman Park Stud at Scone and sold at the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale for $65,000, Carlton Forward is the second foal of Carlton Ace, a Bianconi Melbourne juvenile winner and stakes placed second.
