Kaphero Takes a Well Earned Spell |

After 300 plus days in training Kaphero showed for the first time that he was ready for the paddock. Sensational gallops in the two weeks prior to the Schillaci Stakes a Group 2 event were soon forgotten when the entire recently purchased by Swettenham Stud started sweating up in uncharacteristic fashion in the mounting yard prior to the event. After jumping a touch awkwardly, screwing himself sideways at the start he took a big chunk out of his near fore hoof. He was immediately off the bit chasing just to get to third place behind the very fast Lucky Secret. Contrary to his normally high cruising speed and racing pattern, Kaphero was under pressure on the turn and this was confirmed on straightening as he started to show signs that he certainly was not at his best on the day. He never shirked the issue and although down on form, only went under by 3.15 lengths in the end analysis. Swettenham Stud principal Adam Sangster was very happy to spell the horse and is looking forward to the autumn where Kaphero will possibly tackle the Lightning Stakes and the Oakleigh Plate after a good five to six week spell. As the highest earning entire son of Danzero (a Golden Slipper winner), from a Group 1 winner in Kapchat, the close relation to Champion stallion O’Reilly is expected to assemble a fabulous book of mares on retirement to the showpiece stud at Nagambie in 2009. Trainer Leon Corstens was also happy his charge was having a well earned rest and was confident race goers would see the real Kaphero on his return. Hoof Note (pardon the pun): Stewards Report Caulfield 11th October 2008: “V Duric (Kaphero) explained that the horse did not jump as cleanly today as it had in previous races and was under pressure shortly after straightening and in his opinion today’s performance was a little flat. A subsequent veterinary examination of Kaphero revealed that a part of the wall of the near fore hoof came away during the race and subsequently required farrier attention.”
