Jumped well from outside, but caught on a limb. Rode confidently as sat out there; moved up to leaders on turn. Went for home, showed plenty of class in run to line. Very good 3YO.

By Dash For Cash from Opera Weekend (NZ) (by Paris Opera )
Narrandera A$9k Bnchmk 65 1600m
7th win and quite comfortable by nearly 4L. Only second win at the 1600m and encouraging that it was on reasonable track. May just step up in the next few months.

By Hold That Tiger from Peaking Diablo (USA) (by Diablo (USA) )
Louisiana Downs US$50k 2YO Stks (LISTED) 1600m Turf
Jumped first and led throughout. Kicked on straightening to a 2L advantage and had everything off bit chasing. One flasher from 7th just missed as Tiger Girl toughed it out best.

By Hold That Tiger from In By Six (USA) (by Saratoga Six (USA) )
Evangeline Downs US$12k Clm 1200m Dirt
Pressed the pace from between rivals, moved up to take command nearing 500m mark. Opened a clear lead into the lane and steadily drew off. Good return to form as SW 2YO.

Geelong A$13k Synth 2200m
In very solid form in last 3 starts a second and 2 wins. Liking the 2200m and track. Now has 4 wins from 16 starts aand going to make into a typical Bianconi middle distance handicapper.

By Dash For Cash from Astral Bae (by Stargazer (NZ) )
Pioneer Park A$8k ClB 1200m
Carried 57kgs and wins first race since heading to Alice Springs. Connections need him to get out to a mile to make him a good pickup.

By Court Of Jewels from Blemish (by Bletchencore )
Geelong A$12k F&M Rtng 0-62 Synth 1100m

By Dash For Cash from Miyazaki Grace (by Last Tycoon (IRE) )
Cranbourne A$15k Mdn 1600m
Good 3L win back on turf and heavy track. Seemed to enjoy the step up from 1300 to 1600m after appearing a touch flat footed at Geelong on the synthetic surface. Can go on with it.

By Hold That Tiger from Belle Ball (NZ) (by Jetball )
Carnavon A$8k Hcp 1200m

Troy Turner in the Sangster Silks
Troy Turner in the Sangster Silks
Speech Room the 3YO gelding purchased by Adam Sangster for Swettenham Stud and raced by his wife Sophie has been successful at his fourth race start for Shane Edwards.

The horse has resisted all attempts to leave the security of Swettenham Stud after being purchased at the Melbourne – Great Southern Weanling Sale for $24,000 and earmarked for sale at the WA Magic Millions Yearling Sale in 2008. He was one of three yearlings by Swettenham stallions sent to WA to promote their stallion roster to the west.

The dreaded EI affected the horse, not by getting the equine virus, but by being stranded with his other two stable companions at ridiculous quarantine stations on both sides of the Nullabor for over 4 weeks after leaving early for the sale preparation. Later arrivals did not get caught up in the shifting bureaucratic red tape and only did 6 to 8 days depending on the shipment. The Court of Jewels colt fared the worst of the three getting that sick that despite turning up at the sale, he was quickly withdrawn and trucked off to the vets and placed on a drip for three days.

He was therefore retained and placed with young trainer Shane Edwards who was well known to Swettenham staff from his visits to the eastern state sales and who has sent mares to the Swettenham stallions for himself and clients. He had a mate by Hold That Tiger who was passed in at the sale and he was broken in, educated by Shane before being sold to Hong Kong where he is currently in training with David Hall.

So Speech Room was the retained commodity who after running second to Karrakatta Plate winner Gold Rocks as a 2YO in a trial and going shin sore was put aside to start racing this season at three. His debut run was an absolute pearler and he just wilted in the last three strides to finish fourth at Belmont in a very hot open 3YO race on debut to Sir Hallowell. Second start he was very unlucky coming from the rear and checked twice running home for third beaten a length and a half by Clueless Angel and Dino Mak. His third run again at Belmont saw him near the lead and beaten a length and a quarter into fourth place in a muddling run race over 1400m, which one way or another did not suit him or maybe it was the short back up.

The 1300m race at Northam was supposed to be a maiden, however it became a 68 rating race and the expected soft kill became another test of Speech Room as the very smart Clueless Angel was engaged.

Clueless Angel (Paul Harvey), a three time winner, started at the prohibitive odds of $1.60 and was tracked by Troy Turner on Speech Room for the entire race. The Court of Jewels three year old over raced early, but settled nicely once the pace went on and stuck to his guns in the final 200m when it looked like the favourite had him beaten.

With two weeks break this time, Speech Room did the job required. Interestingly the other two 1300m maidens were for 4YO+ gallopers and the 3YO’s ran the quickest time by 2 and 3 lengths respectively. The 3YO’s also ran home the last 600m (35.08) much quicker. With Clueless Angel coming from fourth place at the 600m mark and three wide on the turn and Speech Room coming from sixth place a further 1.5 lengths astern and four wide he has run home in about 34.75 and been 4 wide.

The quote of the day goes to Troy Turner who on dismounting supposedly said to Shane Edwards he did not want to hit the front too soon as Speech Room loses concentration. Troy’s well judged ride landed him the victor by a short half head. Well done to all concerned Speech Room is still learning, so an expected peak in his ratings is still ahead of him. (IR).
