In a race marred by pre-race drama, Bianconi filly Fair Look announced herself as a horse to follow by winning the $12,000 Midland Express Maiden Plate (1100m) on debut at Kyneton this afternoon. The race was delayed after third emergency from the Mark Anderson stable, Briefs, refused to go into the gates and was subsequently a late scratching. As the field were about to be sent on their way, highly fancied runner, Road Novel, rose high in the stalls before flinging jockey Peter Mertens out the back of the gates. Ambulance workers rushed to the side of Mertens, treating him on course before taking him to a nearby hospital for further medical attention, with what is believed to be a severe foot injury which could sideline him for many weeks. King Of Jewels, who was drawn alongside Road Novel, was also a late scratching after coming into contact with the disorientated horse. However once the race started, the Mick Kent trained Fair Look dismantled his opposition, increasing the winning margin with every stride. Fair Look ($2.80-$2.50 fav) defeated Niseko ($13-$15) by eight lengths with Immovable Force ($21-$41) in third. Winning rider Brad Rawiller, replacing the suspended Nick Hall, was full of praise for the debutant. "It was a very impressive win," Rawiller said. "We enjoyed the right run in the race and got into the right spot in the straight but she just dashed away - just too good. "She was a little strong at first and took a bit of time to come back and let them go. "As soon as she did she switched off, maybe a little too much because I had to give her a slap to make sure she stayed on the bridle, which she straight away responded to. "She's on the up and she'll certainly make it through to the city during the winter and hopefully might be better on a dry track," Rawiller added. Fair Look is by Bianconi out of Bright Side, a mare that won three races in town including the Listed Quezette Stakes (1100m) for three-year-old fillies back in 1998.
