This season is shaping up as a vintage year for Swettenham stallion Bianconi after his latest Group 1 winning son Nicconi scored an effortless win in the $200,000 Group 3 McEwen Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday. The win was with such authority it sparked trainer David Hayes to declare Nicconi as the best sprinter he has trained and his banner horse for the spring. "I think he is the best sprinter I have trained." said Hayes
The numbers certainly back Hayes up with Nicconi battling gale force winds to go within 0.27 seconds of breaking Miss Andretti's race record. But this is not to say that Bianconi is a one horse wonder, quite the contrary. Almost two months into the new season and Bianconi is perched 5th on the overall winners list with 23, and one of the highest winners to runners strike rates in Australasia having only had 72 runners. These winners include recent Randwick winner Streetfighter, Ballarat Showcase winner Solista, dual city winner Coronation Diva and of course frequent flyer Pacino. With a total of 29 wins Bianconi also sits second on the overall stallion wins table and is quickly becoming the 'bargain stallion' standing at only $8,800 for Swettenham Stud. Sitting alongside stallions such as Encosta De Lago, Redoute's Choice and More Than Ready in the sires tables only amplifies the outstanding value that Bianconi currently offers. However the 'bargain tag' might not be around for long as Hayes prepares for a northern hemisphere assault with his stable star Nicconi as a four-year-old. "I think he can be invincible as a sprinter," said Hayes. Hayes plans to train Nicconi as a specialist sprinter and follow in fellow Australian horses Takeover Target and Scenic Blast footsteps in contesting Golden Jubilee and King's Stand Stakes in the U.K. "It's very exciting." Bianconi is by Danzig, out of Fall Aspen and was a Victorian champion first season sire. He is a half-brother to two champion sires in Timber Country and Fort Wood. |
