Swettenham Newsletter September 2010

EVER WONDERED WHAT YOU CAN DO TO MAKE A SMALL, BUT EVERLASTING DIFFERENCE.

When things are tough the last thing people generally think about is others. This 2010 breeding season is shaping up as a watershed moment in Australian thoroughbred history. So surely, we should be acting now - not reacting later.

Like many industries there are times of rationalization and contraction. These times are usually followed by continuous growth and profits. So I suppose you could ask - why should the thoroughbred breeding industry be any different? Well, in many instance it won't be.

CHINA TRIPS GALORE

China TripAdam returned from an overseas trade mission to Shanghai
on September 25th. The three day 2010 China International
Horse Fair was attended by a number of Australians including
Mark Webster Managing Director of Inglis.

Webster addressed the delegates and highlighted the versatility
and toughness of the Australian thoroughbred among other
things. The success of the Australian thoroughbred in Hong Kong
and Singapore was well understood by the conference delegates.

Inglis was joined by other exhibitors in the Shanghai East Asia Exhibition Hall which showcased all equine pursuits to the growing customer base in China. Adam Sangster was exhibiting in conjunction with the Hong Kong Breeder's Club as they introduced a Swettenham Stud Breeding Venture to the participants.

It was only a couple of week's before that Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria participated in a horse fair in Chengdu. That fair saw TBV providing assistance to the organizer's of the first government sanctioned thoroughbred auction in China. The auction went very well with the horses sold to buyers from Shanghai, Beijing and local Chengdu owners and breeders. The Victorian industry received some great mileage from that trip.

174TH GROUP 1 WIN FOR SWETTENHAM STUD EITHER RACED OR BRED.

Congratulations Zipping. What a champion galloper! At his second start after winning an Australian Cup he salutes in the VRC Group 1 Turnbull Stakes defeating Shocking, Shoot Out, Metal Bender and Typhoon Tracy. The grand old galloper 9YO has been extremely well handled by owners Lloyd and Nick Williams to enhance his longevity in 43 starts (now 15 wins and over $3.6m. in earnings).

Zipping became the 174th Group 1 winner bred or raced by Swettenham Stud. His win made up slightly for the disappointment when Changing Skies was beaten a head the day before in the USA Grade 1 Belmont Flower Bowl Invitation Stakes over 10f. The mare by Sadler's Wells from Magnificent Style is bred and raced by Swettenham Stud.

SWETTENHAM SPONSOR BREEDING REPORT ON 7000+ RACES ANNUALLY

Swettenham Stud has moved quickly to secure the sponsorship of the TVN race results breeding segment that follows every race. You will see our logo up there for quite some time as the sponsorship extends beyond two years.

This service is keenly watched by every thoroughbred breeding person. With such a diverse line up of stallions on our roster we believe there is no downside for us. In fact, we won plenty of races (532) in 2009-10 so our stallions should get a fair share of the winners.

We see this as a major coup for our State and we will be very happy if everything that appears is in fact Victorian bred.

SPRING CARNIVAL

One of the most important things for a Stud in the Spring Carnival is to have a few flag bearers that can carry the fortunes of your stallion into the major races. Often the best results from a premiership table are achieved with middle distance and staying horses who can push a sire up the charts very quickly as the major Cups are decided. This is a benefit for the end of season standings, but not the desired outcome from a sales perspective where trainers are focused more on the sprinting type races to a mile that dominate the other nine months of the season.

TALKING CUPS

Soldiers TaleJeremy Noseda rang Adam Sangster to tell him he was
coming for the 2010 Melbourne Cup with Sans Fontieres; and
this was before the horse won the Irish St Leger in scintillating
fashion to get a 2kg penalty. Our stable mail suggests the horse
is even better on a dry track.

Interestingly, the conversation started with how is my mate Soldier's Tale? A visit to the Noseda family's favourite horse will be one of Jeremy first trips when he arrives in Australia. He has an enormous admiration for Soldier's Tale and cannot wait to see his first foals.

When Jeremy speaks about this horse you can only wonder how
good Soldier's Tale might have been with less near career ending injuries. Jeremy gave us some insight to that in the Soldier's Tale video declaring he would have been one of the best horses in a decade. Like the Noseda's we can't wait for his stock to race.

BALLARAT RACE DAY

Ballarat Race DayThe entire day at Ballarat on Showcase Sunday 19th September
was sponsored by Swettenham Stud. Each race was named
after one of the stallions and the eight Showcase races were
keenly contested. A number of past and present clients enjoyed
a drink with the marketing team and it was pleasing to see so
many trainers come and join the party. With over 10 bookings this season coming out of the Ballarat area it is pleasing to put
something back into the racing there, especially when there is
no AFL football on this day.

The horse to follow from the meeting was definitely Krupp
Diamond a first starter in the 1600m Bianconi Maiden who hit the
line like a very good horse. Importantly, he looks a good sort of horse in the flesh and took the eye pre-race.

VISITING STAFF - PROFILE

Amy PalmerAmy Palmer joins the Swettenham Stud team at Nagambie direct
from the English National Stud at Newmarket where she has
worked for the last 3.5 years. Amy was in charge of the foaling
unit and the assistant to the Assistant Manager at the National
Stud.

She has been in Australia and like many overseas workers has
thrown herself headlong into the job and after nearly 7 weeks
has not ventured further a field than Shepparton. So she still has
much exploring to do before she returns to England in mid-January.

Amy is working with the stallions at Swettenham which is a pleasant change for her. She has marveled at the difference in our breeding program in Australia where so many things are done differently, because of our milder climate. Major differences were foaling outside under natural conditions; letting the mares move around with foal in tow and being able to run the mares in for vetting along designated laneways direct from the paddocks. We wish her many pleasant and memorable experiences before she returns.
