Shrinking International Market
It was not long ago that the Hunter Valley NSW and the North East Victoria seemed poles apart. Australian breeding and European races were never mentioned in the same breath. Japanese racing was closed to the world and horses hardly moved between international racing carnivals. How things change.
Now bloodlines are taking on a global value. The largely secreted away little jewel of a stallion is now quickly identified and often the result of huge offers while he is on an upward trend and before he is getting past his best.
So it is with a great deal of pride that I believe the North East stallions in general are demanding of world wide attention. As long as we don’t discover coal in the North East Region then I feel we can safely assume that all the positive signs of the last five years are starting to build into a serious momentum.
We therefore encourage anyone that does not have a full working knowledge of the area to use the weekend of August 11th and 12th to see for themselves.

Sunday Silence Influence is Spreading.
WHILE Japan's stallion masters search for a successor to the legendary Sunday Silence, the decision by the Yoshida family's powerful Shadai breeding operation to send three of his sons to stand in France – Agnes Kamikaze, Divine Light and Rosen Kavalier – is already paying off.
Including Darley's Layman, who entered stud at Haras du Logis this year, there are now four stallions by Sunday Silence in Normandy, giving it the potential to be the sire's most influential region outside of Japan.
It is Divine Light who appears to have the best chance of winning over French breeders. The 12-year-old was one of his sire's fastest sons and just missed winning at the top level when a short-head second to champion sprinter King Halo in the Grade 1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen as a five-year-old.
However “Speed and Sunday Silence” just reinforce the chances of Keep The Faith at Swettenham Stud Nagambie who ran a USA National Turf Record for 6 furlongs (that is 18m further than a normal 1200m race) in 1.06.82 seconds.
Keep The Faith’s last run saw him finish 3rd, beaten under a length in the 8F Group 2 Kelso Stakes pulling the field through the first 6 furlongs in under 1.08.50 and sustaining the speed to go under less than a length in the third fastest Kelso ever run. Narrowly beaten by Artie Schiller who won the Gr 1 Breeders Cup Mile on Turf at his next run.

“A REASON TO KEEP THE FAITH”
Hail To Reason died 30 years ago at the age of 18. Born in 1958, HTR was the product of a mating between the fragile Turn To and the rock hard Nothirdchance.
Whereas Turn To managed only 8 starts as a juvenile in 1953 when he shared top weight on the experimental free hcp, Nothirdchance spent 6 years on the racetrack, racing a total of 93 times. Don’t interpret the length of her career to mean Nothirdchance was ordinary. On the contrary, she won the prestigious Acorn Stakes as a 3YO.
Fortunately Hail To Reason inherited a fair measure of his dams toughness. His trainer Hirsch Jacobs famously said that ‘he though it better to let him wear out than to rust away”. Hail To Reason was a very big horse standing well over 16 hands with a huge frame, he was big boned and rather course.
Even so, Jacobs opted to start racing him as soon as possible and HTR made his debut at Santa Anita on January 21 of his 2yo season. By the time he broke the sesamoids in his near fore in September, he had raced 18 times, winning half of his starts. Seven of his victories came in Stakes Races, and he headed the 1960 Experimental Hcp by 4 lb.
Even though he started his stallion career at 3 and lived to be 18, HTR operated at a time when stallion books were strictly limited. His legacy was a mere 308 foals, of which 43 - or 14% - became Stakes winners. He became one of those rare stallions who sired winners of each of America’s Triple Crown events and he became Champion sire in 1970.
Halo and Roberto are the most important stallion sons of HTR. Halo’s worldwide legacy has been properly secured by the deeds of his Champion son and Champion sire Sunday Silence, the Sire of Keep The Faith, who carries a double cross of HTR.
A tribute to Hail To Reason written over 20 years ago said that “he became one of the most powerful influences for soundness, stamina and class seen in post-war America”. The last 20 years have served only to reinforce that assessment. These attributes surely suit Australian racing.

DASH FOR CASH LAST TWO WINNERS
Cash in a Hurry, a promising gelding prepared by Bruce McLachlan, thumped his older rivals in winning an Open Maiden over 1400 metres at Caloundra.
The grey becomes the eighth individual Australian based first crop winner for Dash for Cash - who's only international runner to date is a multiple winner. Twice placed against his own age, including a narrow second placing at Doomben. Cash in a Hurry sat behind the leaders in today's race and after trying for two runs in the straight he finally switched off their heels and finished too strongly.
Under the urgings of Group One winning jockey Jason Holder, Cash in a Hurry struck the front in the shadows of the post before drawing clear to win by a quickly widening length. Cash in a Hurry, from Pinpante, was purchased by McLachlan for $40,000 from the draft of Erinvale Thoroughbreds from last year's Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale.
More wins are in store now this bloke is being allowed to balance up after jumping. It would have been criminal if he had ended his 2YO races without a win.
Laletta is heading to Brisbane and being set for the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Trophy after her second stunning win from as many runs in Queensland today.
The fleet footed filly by Dash for Cash sat handy to the leaders throughout before storming to the front in the home straight and romping away for an eight and three quarter length win, untouched. Sent out as the odds on favourite after a brilliant debut win on July 1 when she won by six and a half lengths, Laletta is a filly with loads of natural ability according to trainer George Osborne.
"She's just a real natural runner, a little racehorse. She's got loads of ability and she's got a big future. We were patient on her earlier on and I think we could set her for the Magic Millions (3YO Trophy) next January," Osborne reported.
"There's no doubt she's a city class filly," Osborne confirmed. "She's up here learning what racing is all about."
Osborne purchased Laletta for $20,000 at last year's Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale at Morphettville. From the lightly raced, but highly talented, Royal Academy mare My Duchess, Laletta was bred by Birubi Stud owners Malcolm and Sandra Hale.

HOLD THAT TIGER
Swettenham Stud's outstanding young Storm Cat shuttle stallion Hold That Tiger has been represented by another winner in the United States and a debut runner up in England over recent nights.
Loveyouintheworld made history by becoming the sire's first winner when he romped away from his rivals in 5.5 furlong juvenile at Colonial Downs. Hold That Tiger's second winner came when Seaside Storm broke his maiden status in great style at River Downs a few days later.
The colt stalked the leader Chief Windsong throughout before bursting clear in the home straight and cruising home by a length and a half.
In the same week HTT had a debutant runner in England the promising filly Spiritofthetiger beat all but Maybe I Will in the fillies juvenile event at Kempton Park. In a driving finish Spiritofthetiger missed winning on debut by just a neck, with race experience helping get Maybe I Will get over the line at the third time of asking.
Hold That Tiger was a champion two-year-old who won three races in his initial season on the track highlighted by his emphatic victory in the Group One Grand Criterium (7f) at Longchamp. His oldest Australian progeny are currently yearlings and sold this year for prices up to $170,000.
