POTTING STALLIONS - A GREAT AUSTRALIAN TRADITION
One of the things that really identifies the thoroughbred
game from others is the potting of a stallion based on
any one of a hundred criteria that take the spruikers
fancy at the time.
Interestingly the often quoted misinformation can soon
become reality and those practicing their own variety
of industry non analysis will soon think that the
statement they heard was in fact their own.
This certainly appears the situation with the stallion
Hussonet. A big stallion fee hike got all the dooms
Sayers going, but is
their really any fact to the “potting”
or is it fiction. Considering the stallion arrived in Australia
with sensational percentages of SW’s to runners let’s not
embellish him on that record. Let’s see what can be made of his Australian progeny only.
So how would we analyse him?
1. His foals were good types and impressive yearlings hence a number of good judges got on the band wagon early.
2. He started well at stud but then had Weekend Hussler and Reaan winning Group 1 sprints (Oakleigh Plate and Blue Diamond) on the same day.
3. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. Sire sons come on the scene from all parts of the globe.
4. Service fee hike.
5. Now when he is supposedly going quiet as at 22nd Feb 2010:
a. Hussonet has had 212 Starters in Australia for 140 winners (66%).
b. 21 of the 140 winners has earned over A$100,000 of which a third have earned over $250,000.
c. He has 10 SW’s and 12 SP’s for 10.4% stakes horses to runners.
d. He has had three individual Group 1 winners – champion Weekend Hussler, Reann and Gold Trail.
e. He has two genuine Group 2 horses Rios and Eagle Falls (the Hayes trained gelding who won the previously
Group 1 rated sprint the VRC Salinger last Spring).
f. He is presently in 16th place on the sires’ premiership and that does not include prizemoney from his latest
Group 1 winner in NZ the Australian Gold Trail.
g. He served 119 mares in 2008 and 78 mares in 2009.
h. Arrowfield sent at least 73 mares to him in the last two seasons … a vote of confidence?
i. Compare him to Choisir who is burning (makes an interesting comparison as both have the same number
of Australian crops).
6. We would all want a stallion this quiet.
So you would do well to remember his dual Group 1 winning son HOST standing at Swettenham Stud. His foals have been on average the best ever by a Swettenham stallion and received rave reviews from other stud masters so watch out for them in 2011 sales. His first season at stud saw him serve 119 mares.
When potatoes are cheap, plant potatoes.
