Don't Be An Easter Bunny Find The Right Filly

The Golden Slipper field for 2007 comprises exactly 50% fillies. Interestingly seven of the nine fillies in the field were presented for sale. Six sold and one was retained with a $500,000 reserve. Non sales fillies are Sleek Chassis winner of the Blue Diamond Stakes Group 1 and Rose Ceremony. Table 1 suggests that access to the better fillies is getting harder each year. The following table may give you some insight into the extent that the better fillies are retained by breeders.

At $300,000 Swettenham Stud provides the most expensive filly sold that runs in the 2007 Golden Slipper with their Danehill Dancer filly now racing as Downhill Racer. It is no coincidence that Swettenham Stud have one of their fillies in the race. Adam Sangster has sought to sell all the yearlings produced each year to establish the Swettenham name in the market place. It was only last July that Swettenham Stud opened in its own name after trading for years as Collingrove Stud.

It is a fact of life that fillies are generally hard to buy and particularly fillies from good families. Adam has 14 fillies in the sale of his own and 4 as agent for clients. These are extremely well bred and well related as Table 2 will atest. The fillies on offer have been bred up and have a lot happening in their immediate families. They represent a golden opportunity to buy into a top family. For instance, the Redoute’s Choice x Kensington Gardens filly is a ¾ sister to two Group 1 winners, Blackfriars and Larrocha and three other good stakeswinners like Manton etc. She is a once in a life time chance to get a potential foundation mare and race filly all rolled into one.

Manton Estate UK Update

The Manton Estate is the centrepiece of the Swettenham operation in the UK. This enormous 2300 acre property, with over 500 acres of gallops and eleven training areas, has enjoyed a reputation as one of the best training establishments in Europe. Guy and Ben Sangster have transformed the property from a private yard into a training enterprise accessable to all owners (world wide). Hence it has already been confirmed as the training base for the Lee Freedman trained Miss Andretti when she heads to the UK to tackle the Global Sprints.

Importantly, Manton’s resident trainer Brian Meehan has enhanced the results from Manton starting right from his first runner in the US winning at Group1 level. 2006 started in great style for Brian with David Junior winning the Dubai Duty Free G1 at Nad el Sheba  (US$7.5m) in March and the season continued in the same vein with David Junior winning the Coral Eclipse G1 at Sandown.

Brian ventured to the US when Red Rocks made the trip to Churchill Downs in November and came away with the Breeders Cup Turf  G1, which helped him rack up a season ending 76 winners and the prestigious UK award for Top International Trainer.

Brian is looking to get 2007 off to a flying start when he sends Jack Oliver to Dubai at the weekend to run in the UAE Derby and then saddles up Red Rocks for Sheema Classic G1 on Sat 31st March. Bicoastal a 3YO by Gone West is shipping to Keenland to run in the Ashford Stakes G1 on 7th of April.

It comes as no surprise that his stable has grown. Now with over 160 horses in training at Manton Brian is looking to improve on last year’s achievements.
First Weekend of the Sydney Autumn Carnival

Swettenham Stud certainly made their mark on the first weekend of the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

Two important 2YO black type results from yearlings sold by Swettenham Stud and really heading places. See under for details on the weekend’s runners.

Still more to come as Swettenham Stud capped off a great weekend their stallions with Dash For Cash producing his first Stakeswinner, then Bianconi having another two winners including Bianomour who is fast scaling the middle distance ranks and defeated good stayer Zipping (also a Swettenham Sales product).

Not to be outdone Keep The Faith also got in the action. The little brother Pistols a $1.1m yearling and half brother by Dehere to Swettenham Stud’s popular (131 mares first season) sire Keep The Faith (Sunday Silence x Duelling Girl) won again at only his fourth start. His victory in the Listed 1400m 2YO Ballieu Stakes gave John Hawkes three straight victories in the race (previously Paratroopers and Mentality). Keep The Faith’s sire was also prominent on the world stage as he produced yet another quinella in a Group 1 race in Japan this time over 1200m on Turf with Suzuka Phoenix easily defeating Peer Gynt.

Downhill Racer Wins G2

Downhill Racer winner of the Group 2 Paramatta Leagues Club Magic Night Stakes on Saturday at Rosehill has forced herself into the Golden Slipper field. The courageous win was a highlight of the weekend for this lovely filly bred who was sold by Swettenham Stud for $300,000 to James Bester Bloodstock. She is now an extremely valuable filly as a Group Winner from a magnificent family. Her dam Trick Ski is a Rory’s Jester mare from Rossignol and this is a famed Swettenham family that has produced Schubert, Pinezero, Gonski and Recast. Downhill Racer has amassed $133,600 from 3 starts all in the city, boasting 2 wins and a close second for trainer David Hayes.

Extension of Time Wins Listed
Extension of Time winner of the Listed www.racingandsports.com.au Walter Brown Stakes over 1310m at Cheltenham was the first stakes winner for Dash For Cash. With his oldest progeny only 2YO’s they are certainly making an impact. Dash For Cash now boasts 13 runners: 5 winners, 2 placegetters with 85% in the money for earnings of $263,119. Importantly, Extension of Time carried 58kgs topweight (min 54.5kgs) and recorded her third win. Bred and sold by Swettenham Stud for $150,000 as a yearling at the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast Extension Of Time is from the good racemare Nina Haraka. She is still looking for even more ground despite her three wins being 1000m, 12000m and the latest 1310m. Her back to back wins have seen her really stretching out in the last 50 meters and starting to power away.

City Winner
Peregian has now won 50% of her 8 runs and completed her third win in town at Warwick Farm on Monday in a 1400m 3YO Fillies race. The daughter of Grand Lodge from Unbridled Victory is then heading for an Oaks start (possibly in Queensland) according to trainer John Hawkes. Peregian was an astute $40,000 purchase to Vin Cox and has now earned over $100k. Her win was very professional with top weight of 58kgs on a 53kg minimum.

2YO Debut Winner
Rosaria won the Super Vobis 2YO at Saturday’s main provincial meeting in Victoria for Peter Moody. The filly by Rory’s Jester from Rosa Nilda did a great job on debut and the $130,000 buy ex Magic Millions looks like great buy for Richard Foster.
