Breeding Industry Demands Reasonable and Fair Commentary

There is no more susceptible industry than the horse racing industry to the rule that “Perception becomes reality”.

Often a trainer with a good feature winner has his stable described as “on fire” when the winner is often the first for several weeks. A jockey is supposedly “flying”, after a long run of failures are forgotten, when the well backed winner salutes.

The Breeding arena is no different. A stallion can be identified by the commentator as “killing them” despite a host of runners not saluting before one wins a nice race. A stallions yearlings are lauded over and his service fee talked up when there are many such cases worthy of mention.

People are letting too many public commentators get away with setting, steering and deciding the agenda and the content. We need to condemn industry rhetoric and broad based assumptions from our commentators and seek accountable, informed and fair commentary in return.

It is a hard game made even more difficult if you fall for the highly promoted perceptions, the gross assumptions and the basic drivel. Until such time as the industry commentators take on the responsibility you need to do your own due diligence.

It is almost guaranteed to give you much more satisfaction from breeding and racing horses? In any case it will be a lot more fun controlling your own destiny than having your script written by others.

Review of Stock Swettenham Stallions with Progeny Racing

Bianconi

A very interesting stallion as to May 19th only had 141 runners in the Southern Hemisphere after 3 small crops to start his career. There is no point comparing him with ordinary stallions to let him stand out; so how does he measure up against some of the best Danehill (Danzig line) stallions? Consider the following Southern Hemisphere statistics taken from Bloodhound on May 19th 2007.

Now it is the opinion of the editor that Bianconi is set to strike. He has over 400 fillies or colts as two year olds, yearlings and weanlings to represent him. It would seem that the big numbers that the better stallions boast are now going to be his best ally for a rise up the General Sires’ Premiership.

Bianconi has never been a 2YO sire and those people who exercise patience with his stock seem best rewarded. That said he has a 2YO winners to runners ratio of 25% this season from 12 runners to-date and all winners are handy horses.

» Glenarvon Girl rounded out her resume with a Randwick 2YO win in May after debuting with a 900m
Newcastle 2YO win when last in work.

» Hurriconi won on debut at the Wagga Cup meeting before a rousing third at Randwick his only
two efforts so far.

» Schilling won impressively at Ballarat after a very tough fifth placing at Caulfield when caught wide on
debut with no cover.

The significant point is that all three suggest that Bianconi has upgraded the mares involved. With all due respect the three dams won $24,972; $11,630; and $11,456 respectively. The broodmare sires involved are Tuscany Flyer, Jan Murray and Prized. Importantly the three dams were all winners with 3 wins (Rotorua RC, Shoalhaven City TC and Hawkesbury RC); 2 wins (Goulbourn RC and Murrumbidgee TC); 2 wins (Bay Meadows (USA)) twice).

Bianconi’s older stock are tough horses that can back up. City winners Bianomour (ex Military Plume mare) 4 wins from 12 starts this season; Bian Seen (ex Suave Dancer mare) 3 wins from 6 starts this season and Starzando (ex Jackson Square mare) 3 wins from 8 starts this season all have back to back wins. Over 20% of Bianconi’s Southern Hemisphere winners are city winners. His winners to runners percentage increases to 66.7% over both hemispheres.

Do your own due diligence on stallion selection; control your own destiny and judge for yourself? He may just be the horse you are looking for.

Dash for Cash

What a start! You must check the attachments here to get a real appreciation of the scope of his stock to-date and the perceived upside in breeding to this very genuine back to back Group 1 winning racehorse.

Suffice to say that 5 individual city winners is a really terrific start for any first season sire.
