MELBOURNE PREMIER FACTS AND OPINIONS
FACTS
» The median price (ie mid point of sales) for NSW based stallions in the 3 days of the main W. Inglis
Premier Yearling Sale was $60,000 while the median for Victorian based stallions was $50,000
(it was $55k after the first two days, but slipped back).
» Super VOBIS yearlings had a higher average by $973 and the same median in the Premier 3 days
than other yearlings.
» In the P2 session Super VOBIS yearlings had a lower average by $366, but a higher median by
$1000 at $24000 than other yearlings.
Editor: It seems your Super VOBIS payment is almost covered in these increased returns so every time the horse runs you get a free crack at extra bonuses if available.
OPINIONS
» The P2 sale saw 170 lots catalogue and 21 withdrawn so just 149 lots to sell. This sale started at
11.00am on a Thursday. This represents a major gallop morning for trainers, followed by acceptances
and rider declarations going through until 11.30am for the weekend’s races. This sale day also clashed
with the popular Ballarat races. Amazing how many buyers from 2008 did not buy in 2009.
» When 10% of any sale (particularly the main sale) is one stallion, the buyers can pick and choose.
They tend to stay solid in their price range and will miss a yearling and wait for a similar type that will
follow in the ring shortly. There is no urgency based on the fact you may miss a yearling by that sire.
No stallion in Australia can withstand the pressure of such a big percentage of any sale and not have
his sales appeal and hence average affected.
